Game of the Year discussions often revolve around individual titles or genres, but nomination history also reveals which studios with the most goty nominations.
When examining developers with the most GOTY nominations, a clear concentration becomes visible. While dozens of studios have released critically acclaimed titles, only a small group appears consistently across multiple nomination cycles.
This post presents a structured breakdown of GOTY nominations by developer, based strictly on historical nomination data. No qualitative judgment is applied. The focus remains exclusively on frequency of appearance within the dataset.
The Dataset
The data presented in this post is part of a broader Game of the Year dataset developed as an independent research project focused on nomination history across multiple industry dimensions.
The dataset compiles official GOTY nominations over several years, organizing entries by studios, platform association, release timing, publisher classification, and other structural attributes. The developer breakdown used here represents one specific segment of this larger dataset.
For this article, the focus is limited to nomination frequency by development studio. Other dimensions of the dataset, including release timing patterns, platform distribution, and cross-generational comparisons, are explored in separate posts.
The full dataset has been structured and visualized using Power BI, where interactive charts allow for deeper exploration of nomination concentration and distribution patterns.

GOTY Nominations by Studios (Original Chart)

The chart above displays the number of GOTY nominees released by developers.
Nintendo (9 nominations)

Founded in 1889 and entering the video game industry in the late 20th century, Nintendo has established itself as one of the most influential first-party developers in modern gaming. The company is known for long-running franchises and internally developed titles closely tied to its hardware ecosystem.
Within the dataset, Nintendo appears as the most frequently nominated developer, accumulating 9 total GOTY nominations. This repeated presence places the studio at the top of the nomination distribution.
From Software (5 nominations)

Founded in 1986, FromSoftware gained global recognition in the 2010s through the development of action role-playing titles known for their distinct design structure and recurring creative direction.
In the dataset, FromSoftware ranks second with 5 total GOTY nominations. It is the only developer besides Nintendo to surpass the five-nomination mark, placing it in a clearly defined upper tier within nomination history.
The Top 2 Gap
The gap between the top two studios and the rest of the field is significant. Nintendo holding 9 nominations, nearly double the total of the second-ranked studio. FromSoftware, with 5 nominations, stands as the only studio besides Nintendo to cross the five-nomination threshold.
This has to be mentioned again because the visible separation creates a clear tier structure within the dataset.
Studios with 3 or less nominations

The large number of studios with a single nomination demonstrates how competitive and concentrated the nomination landscape is. While many studios achieve critical recognition, consistent multi-cycle nomination presence remains uncommon.
This uneven distribution reinforces the dominance of a small subset of studios within the broader GOTY ecosystem.
Closing Notes
This overview documents the frequency of GOTY nominations by studios without extending into qualitative evaluation.
